Happy New Year! You may be seeing all kinds of posts about new years resolutions. But after the past year, it may be hard to think of making any changes or preparing for long term goals. Don’t worry if your 2020 aspirations and intentions went right out the window – you are not alone! But January in a new year always brings a time to reflect and think about how we want to move forward. Now that it is 2021, we here at Ellis Family Dentistry have a few ideas to help you start the new year off on the right foot. And of course, we would be remiss if we did not give you some tips to optimize your oral health! We want to share how you can take small steps that grow into long-term habits for your health.
Let’s talk about some ways to make small steps that will lead to large impacts in the future. These suggestions can be used as building blocks for long term habits. Your future self will thank you!
Replace your old toothbrush. If you can’t remember the last time you changed your toothbrush (or toothbrush head), then now is the time! Frayed bristles on an old toothbrush can end up damaging your teeth rather than cleaning them properly.
We recommend you change your toothbrush every three or four months to get your best possible clean. Need some suggestions on which brush is best? Give us a call or ask at your next appointment for some recommendations!
Turn off the water while you brush. This one is as simple as turning off the tap right after you wet your toothbrush! That little drop of water is all you need. Turning off the water is a great way to be environmentally friendly and saves money on your bill!
Floss. You probably knew this would be on here but, it is super important to mention! Flossing helps prevent decay and gum recession.
Our tips to help build a flossing habit? Figure out which flossing method works best for you – options include traditional floss, a flossing stick, or a water pic – and floss at the same time each day until it becomes routine. You can also start small with a goal of flossing just once a week. Soon you may be craving a good floss every time you brush!

These small steps can help you achieve a healthy smile – and you can work to save money and the environment! The best way to optimize your oral health is to come in for your routine cleanings and exams at the dentist. Most people should have appointments every six months. Staying on top of your health now can save you time and money in the future!
Now is the best time to get your booking on the calendar! Go ahead and claim the day or time that works best for you. Don’t wait until your schedule is full and you accidentally forget! Give us a call to schedule your appointment or request an appointment online using the link below!
